What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins. It's one of the most common eye conditions and affects people of all ages, though it becomes more common with age.
The condition involves the eyelids becoming red, swollen, and irritated. Tiny oil glands near the base of the eyelashes can become blocked, and debris may accumulate along the eyelid margins.
Blepharitis is closely linked to dry eye syndrome—the two conditions often occur together and share common treatments.
Types of Blepharitis
Anterior Blepharitis

- Outer eyelid (where eyelashes attach)
- Common causes:
- Bacterial overgrowth, seborrheic dermatitis
- Appearance:
- Crusty debris at base of lashes
Posterior Blepharitis
- Location:
- Inner eyelid (meibomian glands)
- Common causes:
- Meibomian gland dysfunction
- Appearance:
- Blocked oil glands, foam in tear film
